The first Frantone's restaurant was opened in Downey, CA, by Sleme and Rose Tesoriero in 1964, in a former grocery store.
Today's Downey location has expanded to 6,200 square feet, a dining room that seats 260 and a team of 35 employees. In addition, the family has expanded the Frantone's name to include stores in Cerritos and three locations on the Cerritos College campus. Banquets and catering have also become a large part of the Frantones operation.
Sleme, who emigrated from Sicily, operated a restaurant and a bar in the Haymarket Square section of Boston. When the city decided to redevelop the area and add more government offices, the business became part of the eminent domain process. With relatives in California, Sleme moved his family West, looking for a good family community in which to open a restaurant. At the time, North American Rockwell was flourishing in Downey, CA and it seemed the perfect spot to get involved with parents and children.
In the early 1970's, Sleme turned the reigns over to his son's Anthony and John, and Son-In-Law, Frank, to run the existing restaurant. As the Frantone's reputation grew, a store in Cerritos was opened in 1990, and locations on the Cerritos College campus opened in 1992. Service organizations and clubs realize Frantone's goes the extra mile in helping its customers. Groups frequently request the restaurants' catering services or meet at their banquet facilities, agreeing the flavors and service are both consistently excellent.
